The Portuguese manager appeared to be set for a fantastic third season in charge at Old Trafford but it’s fair to say his side aren’t meeting expectations at all.
United are currently in sixth place despite winning the Europa League and League Cup in Mourinho’s first season in charge and finishing in second place in his second season in charge.
Though he only signed Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant in the summer, many expected the former Real Madrid boss to lead his team to the title.
Unfortunately that hasn’t been the case and with such a huge gap to first place, it doesn’t appear likely so early on either.
According to the Express, Nani said to Goal: “Obviously the goal is to be Premier League champions, but the competition is fierce.
“Although last year United managed to finish in second place, this year isn’t going as expected.
“I’m sure though that if there is a coach able to turn things around and put the club on the right path it’s Jose.
“Like Sir Alex Ferguson, he has charisma and a very strong character. Those elements are key for success.”
Manchester United fans will be hoping there’s truth to Luis’ words as there’s still time to turn things around for sure.
Though the title may be out of sight, getting into the Champions League qualification spots is still achievable if they can go on a winning run.
United can get such a run going should they beat their fierce rivals Liverpool later today especially since all three points are desperately needed.
