From Holland: Manchester United keeping tabs on PSV forward Steven Bergwijn

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United scouts were present for PSV Eindhoven’s 2-2 draw with FC Emmen to watch highly rated youngster Steven Bergwijn, according to Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf.

The 21-year-old, who made his debut for PSV in 2014, has been directly involved in 17 goals in as many Eredivisie games this season, scoring nine and registering eight assists.

Bergwijn’s performances out wide earned him a call-up to the Netherlands side in October 2018, with Ronald Koeman’s youthful squad showing encouraging signs of progression since the World Cup.

And according to De Telegraaf, a leading media outlet for sport in the Netherlands, Man United are keeping a very close eye on him along with Hirving Lozano, who emerged as a target over the summer following an impressive World Cup with Mexico.

Emphasis must be on adding a new central defender and bolstering the right-back area, with Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young – both 33 – entering the twilight stages of their careers, but it is no surprise to see United watching Bergwijn.

Juan Mata’s days at Old Trafford feel numbered and the injection of a sharp, energetic presence in the final third, coming from the right hand side, certainly seems like a step in the correct direction for United.
