Player ratings: Chelsea 0-2 Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

Sergio Romero 6 – Made a good double-save from David Luiz and then Pedro towards the start, but aside from that had very little to worry about.

Ashley Young 6 – Kept extremely tight to Eden Hazard, maintaining a strong level of running power throughout, but could have been more precise with his passing at times.

Chris Smalling 7 – Very strong performance on a rare start for Smalling. Out-muscled and outfought Gonzalo Higuain.

Victor Lindelof 7 – Elegant as always, placing himself in just the right position at all times. Made a crucial intervention from a goal-bound Hazard shot.

Luke Shaw 7 – The Englishman is performing to such a high standard that it no longer commands attention. So committed throughout. Made a stunning block from Pedro when it seemed inevitable he would score.

Nemanja Matic 7 – The more subtle member of an irresistible midfield at Stamford Bridge. Cleaned up loose balls with diligence and used the ball smartly. Lacked discipline with his tackles in the second half, and could have easily received a red.

Ander Herrera 8 – Man of the match by far. A classic big-game, high-intensity masterclass from the effervescent Spaniard, who was simply everywhere. Scored a wonderful header to put Manchester United ahead.

Paul Pogba 7 – Delightful to watch, once again delivering on the big stage. Supplied the most delicious cross for Herrera’s header, before scoring one of his own to finish off a move he started. Incomparably brilliant.

Juan Mata 6 – Played a key role in both goals, floating into dangerous positions and using the ball intelligently, but understandably faded in the second period.

Romelu Lukaku 5 – Disappointing yet again. Worked hard from the team, granted, but that spring and finesse in tight areas just was not there. Looked clunky.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Did not pose a direct goal threat but did everything else impeccably: an inch-perfect ball for Pogba’s goal, linking up well with teammates, and running like a demon as Man United played on the counter after half time.
