Player ratings: Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

Sergio Romero 6 – Produced two excellent saves either side of half time but will be disappointed to have conceded a goal at his near post.

Diogo Dalot 6 – Good energy down that right hand side. Wolves mainly received joy going down the other flank. Could have been more disciplined with his passing.

Chris Smalling 5 – Started the game in commanding fashion but a positional mistake half time, which sent Raul Jiminez through, paved the way for a shakier second period.

Victor Lindelof 6 – The Swede was part of the chaos in the box leading to Wolves’ goal, but he can look back on another technically accomplished performance.

Luke Shaw 6 – Difficult night, with Wolves directing almost all of their attacks down his side. Battled hard on his 1ooth club appearance but found himself overwhelmed for the second goal.

Nemanja Matic 5 – Nowhere near good enough. Too slow in possession and way too sloppy with his passing. Outclassed by Ruben Neves, his opposite number.

Ander Herrera 6 – Gave a determined account of himself, snapping at heels in the middle, but largely ineffective. Subbed off after Wolves opened the scoring.

Paul Pogba 5 – Very frustrating. Never appeared able to find space and his work in tight areas was well below standard. United could not get going without him.

Jesse Lingard 5 – Tasked with closing down Neves but the plan didn’t work: the Portuguese still flourished, and Lingard never looked to be in a useful position going forward.

Anthony Martial 4 – Practically non-existent on his first start since mid-February. Hardly touched the ball.

Marcus Rashford 5 – Broke away and fired off a shot only once in the whole game, as Wolves pressed and squeezed any space around him. First touch was very substandard.
