Manchester United hoping to extend Juan Mata’s contract: report

by Marwan Harraz

Manchester United are reportedly hoping to hold onto Juan Mata despite rumours of a squad overhaul being on the cards this summer.

Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera have both been confirmed as players who will depart once their contracts expire next month but the club have remained quiet on the former Chelsea man’s future.

The attack midfielder’s deal also ends this summer with it being understood that some top European clubs are interested in signing him for free.

However, Mata has himself also remained silent on whether his future will be at Old Trafford or elsewhere next season.

Fans are split over whether there’s a need to hold onto him as a useful squad option or to let him go entirely.

According to ESPN, the Red Devils are so keen on keeping Juan that they’ve already offered him a deal as they’re not ready to give up on extending his stay just yet.

The truth is the Spaniard doesn’t really suit Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s high tempo, pacy attacking football if he’s forced out wide.

As an attacking midfielder though, Mata has enough in the tank to cause damage on occasion and would be one of the club’s remaining experienced players.
