Manchester United legend Jaap Stam has indirectly urged Manchester United to sign Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt.
The youngster has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford of late despite initial reports claiming Barcelona had the transfer locked down.
De Ligt emerged as one of the most sought-after teenagers in the world after his performances in the Champions League garnered interest.
Ajax made it all the way through to the semi-finals unexpectedly, beating the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus, impressing Stam as well.
The latest reports though claim that United are not actually chasing Matthijs so the club legend might not get what he wants.
According to the Mirror, Jaap said: “He’s a great player. He’s only a youngster as everybody knows. But in how he plays, he’s an adult, to be honest.
“He’s got composure on the ball, he’s aggressive tactically, he sees the game, he reads the game well and he’s got that driving force for himself as well in what you need to achieve and where you want to go to.
“I think that’s one of the most important thing for a player to have – to have goals for yourself, that you want to make steps, that you want to improve yourself, that you want to go the highest level.
“I think he would suit very well over here if they’re trying to pick him up and I am not sure if that’s the truth, of course, because a lot of things have been said and have been written as well.
“But he is a player that absolutely fits in here, but it is up to him as well. He’s the type of player that a manager I think wants to work with.”
Some fans have grown hopeful over a move despite Manchester United’s inability to match Barcelona’s guarantee of trophies and Champions League football.
Others aren’t falling for the reports and believe the sudden interest from Old Trafford is simply a gimmick potentially used by the player’s agent to force Barcelona into a bigger pay.
Only time will tell which is the truth but there’s no doubt over De Ligt’s ability to improve United’s defence.
