Manchester United handed boost with PSG not close to Matthijs de Ligt

by Marwan Harraz

Manchester United have been handed a boost in their chase for Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt’s signature after it became clear PSG aren’t as close as initially thought to a transfer.

The French side were said to have leapfrogged both those at Old Trafford and Barcelona in the race for the Dutchman.

The Ligue 1 giant were believed to have offered the youngster incredible wages which United and the Spanish club couldn’t match.

De Ligt is Europe’s most wanted teenager after his performances for Ajax in the Champions League in particular impressed all those who watched.

The Red Devils weren’t initially thought to have a chance due to only qualifying for the Europa League but after reports about PSG’s interest grew, their hopes were completely over, until now.

According to the Mirror, Matthijs’ agent Mino Raiola said: “This is the classic example of fake news.

“The photograph of me and the French journalist in Paris? He asked me to take a picture together, but I did not know who this gentleman was.

“I have never spoken with him.”

The said journalist had claimed on Twitter that Raiola was in Paris to complete the transfer of De Ligt to PSG.

The agent would actually benefit from such speculation as it adds to the value of the youngster as well as driving up his commission.

Therefore it’s quite telling he would openly dismiss the suggestion unless it’s only to scare PSG into thinking the transfer isn’t as complete as they believe.

Whatever the case is, it’s clear the summer’s biggest transfer saga is set to continue and who knows how close Manchester United are to De Ligt.
