Gianluca Di Marzio: Manchester United ready to launch €80m Sergej Milinkovic-Savic bid

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United are prepared to make an offer worth €80m (£72m) for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, according to reliable journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the market for midfield reinforcements this summer following the departures of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera.

The club have reportedly targeted Bruno Fernandes and Sean Longstaff, but their interest in Milinkovic-Savic dates back to last year.

According to Di Marzio, Man United are prepared to lodge a bid of €80m to bring one of Europe’s top midfielders to Old Trafford.

United’s interest in Milinkovic-Savic last summer – the concreteness of which remains unclear – was seemingly snuffed out by Lazio claiming that the club would only entertain offers for the Serbian that exceeded €100m, a price Ed Woodward balked at. Having signed Fred for £52m earlier in the window, there was no need to go all out for another midfielder.

This summer may well be different. Herrera and Fellaini are already gone. Nemanja Matic does not have much time left. Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira are good players but cannot play every week. And Paul Pogba, for all we know, could be on his way.

Spending big in midfield, regardless of the above variables, is paramount if United are to rival the likes of Manchester City, who recently just broke their transfer record on a midfielder, signing Rodri from Athletico Madrid for £62.5m.
