Player ratings: Perth Glory 0-2 Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

FIRST HALF

Sergio Romero N/A – Had quite literally nothing to do. Could have sat on the grass listening to Bob Dylan if he’d have wanted to.

Diogo Dalot 6 – Played more inside than down the flank, often looking to create pieces of interplay with attacking players. Passing was hit and miss.

Axel Tuanzebe 7 – Very smooth showing on the ball from the Englishman. Passed up the pitch with precision and looked unflustered by taking risks.

Phil Jones 6 – Did not have much defending to do at all, with Perth largely camped in their own half.

Ashley Young 5 – Decent work rate as usual but lacked sharpness with his final ball – something you probably could have inferred by yourself without even watching the game.

Nemanja Matic 5 – Looked slightly off the pace in possession. Needed to move play forward faster and occasionally got caught with the ball under his feet.

Andreas Pereira 6 – Sloppy with the ball at times but at least looked to play positively, often surging forward into gaps.

Tahith Chong 6 – Started the game slowly but produced some powerful bursts on the ball as the first half went on. Should have perhaps won a penalty after a clever dart into the box.

Jesse Lingard 7 – Looked very sharp at No.10, dropping into spaces and flying forward, often looking to create close pieces of interplay with teammates.

Daniel James 7 – The most encouraging part of those first 45 minutes. Bombed in behind the defence with pace and intent, reaching the byline on a few instances as he looked to square the ball for Martial.

Anthony Martial 6 – Would have wanted to see more of the ball but looked fresh and dangerous when he did have possession, running in behind at times and also dropping deep to drive at defenders. Perhaps No.9 could be his position this season?

SECOND HALF

Joel Pereira N/A – Same story as Romero.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7 – Very solid display. Did not have much defending to do, but when any Perth player came at him, they did not get past. Produced three truly classic full-back tackles which reminded everyone of why Crystal Palace players nicknamed him ‘Spider’.

Marcos Rojo 5 – Highlights of Rojo’s display include: a 4o-yard shot, blasted miles over the bar; thrashing about in the box at corners; passing to the full-backs. End.

Chris Smalling 6 – Had very little to do, especially as the game started to peter out. Kept his passing simple and precise.

Luke Shaw 6 – Displayed good energy down that left-hand side and sought to link up with the lively Angel Gomes, cutting inside to help break Perth down.

Scott McTominay 6 – Unspectacular performance. Passed the ball sensibly enough, feeding play forward when he could, but the pace of the game precluded any real assessment of the youngster.

Paul Pogba 7 – Upped the tempo and concision of United’s passing in the final third, producing a smart flicked assist for Marcus Rashford.

Mason Greenwood 7 – Incredible to think the lad is just 17. Played with such power and confidence down the right-hand side, and should have scored when he broke through on goal on one occasion.

Juan Mata 6 – A quietly effective performance at No.10, with the Spaniard improving the pace of United’s forward passing. Always a dependable figure on the ball.

Angel Gomes 7 – Impressed at close quarters, linking up well with Rashford and Pogba as United looked to pass their way through Perth’s low block. His technical quality under pressure would have impressed Solskjaer.

Marcus Rashford 6 – Opened the scoring with an excellent finish going across the keeper into the bottom right-hand corner and played with good intensity.

SUBSTITUTES

James Garner – Came on and scored with pretty much his first touch, thundering the ball into the bottom corner from outside the box.
