Scott McTominay produced a performance packed with mettle and execution during Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in Shanghai.
The 22-year-old, a favourite of Jose Mourinho, impressed in big games last season – most notably Liverpool and Barcelona at home – at a time when others either disappeared or were injured.
In pre-season, he has continued act as a commanding figure, producing driven displays at the base of midfield – most notably against Spurs.
The numbers from his game only tell you some of the story behind what was a confident, physically imposing display.
Scott McTominay’s first half vs. Spurs by numbers:
100% final third pass accuracy
100% aerial duels won
90% pass accuracy
5 long balls

McTominay has limited ability, and for that alone will be considered not good enough for United by many supporters, but this guy does have a place at this level.
Much like Jordan Henderson at Liverpool or Gary Neville back in the day, McTominay possesses a kind of mindset which would not look out of place in the Marines. Dedication, dedication, dedication. Every pass, every stretch, matters so much to him.
It is this mentality, this feeling you get from him, which suggests he can atone for a comparative lack of technical ability and play a driving role in this United midfield alongside more talented characters.
