Sky Sports: Manchester United willing to splash £80m on Harry Maguire

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United are willing to splash out an £80m fee for Harry Maguire which would make him the most expensive defender of all time, according to Sky Sports News.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pinpointed Maguire as his number one target in the transfer window but negotiations with Leicester have proven difficult.

Man United’s initial offer for Maguire was £70m, but Leicester, according to most reports, are flatly refusing any bid under £90m for the defender.

It was revealed last night that United were willing to spend £80m on the Englishman in an attempt to get Leicester to compromise.

At a time when all the talk is about Paulo Dybala, there is an anxiety among United fans about this transfer – without doubt the most important one of them all, arguably even more than Aaron Wan-Bissaka, one that, ideally, would have been done on June 1.

To make the anxiety worse, there are conflicting reports on this transfer. Gianluca Di Marzio, normally very reliable, claimed on Tuesday that an agreement had been reached. Various sources on Wednesday repeated that United remained miles away from Leicester’s valuation, and that the club had started to focus on Samuel Umtiti instead.

On a personal level, I fear this transfer will not happen. For United’s sake, for top four’s sake, I hope this presentiment is wrong.
