Harry Maguire enjoys sensational Manchester United debut against Chelsea

by Leo Nieboer

Harry Maguire enjoyed the perfect debut for Manchester United as the defender performed superbly in a 4-0 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford.

The hosts began the game shakily, with Chelsea hitting the woodwork twice, but became more commanding after taking the lead through a Marcus Rashford penalty.

Those last 45 minutes were special for Maguire, whose sheer defensive presence served as the springboard for a lethal counterattacking performance during which United struck three times to kill the game.

Maguire’s stats shed light on what was yet another complete defensive performance, topping the charts for blocks, tackles and interceptions.

It was the second goal, just after midway in the second half, that unleashed the madness. And it all started from Maguire’s boot.

Upon seeing it initially, nothing much happens. But the way Maguire – in a display of brilliant confidence – leaned in and got his foot to the ball, at a time when Chelsea shirts were encircling the box and probing United’s goal, gave his team that first and crucial touch forward to ignite a brilliant counterattack ending in Anthony Martial scoring.

In more than one sense, Maguire has made this United defence look taller. Solskjaer emphasised earlier today that it was important to have a settled defensive partnership this season. In Lindelof and Maguire, he has exactly that.
