Owen Hargreaves compares Mason Greenwood to Robin van Persie

by Marwan Harraz

Former Manchester United man Owen Hargreaves has compared Mason Greenwood to Robin van Persie following his match-winning performance vs Astana.

The sensational youngster scored his first senior goal for the club against the Europa League opponents as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men scraped by 1-0.

Perhaps Greenwood could one day become as great a player as Van Persie but for the most part the comparisons have been made due to their similar styles of play rather than actual talent.

Solskjaer is adamant the academy product will have a successful career at United and to be truthful there’s a real need for attacking talent at Old Trafford given the lack of depth.

Greenwood mainly played on the right-wing but alternated positions with his teammates throughout in order to confuse the stubborn Astana defence.

Fans were right to be full of praise but expectations have to be tamed as Greenwood must be given a true chance to develop into something special.

There’s no doubt he will make mistakes, he will be inconsistent and he will fail to impress but he has to be given the opportunity to get through these rough patches without being overly criticised.

On the other hand, supporters are always going to demand to see more of an exciting talent so one would expect Greenwood to pick up more minutes the more the season goes on.
