Player ratings: Manchester United 1-0 Astana

by Leo Nieboer

Sergio Romero 6 – Had nothing to do. Another clean sheet. The Europa League boss.

Diogo Dalot 5 – Displayed some good footwork at times, almost carving out an assist in the first half, but his crossing was awful throughout, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was visibly angry with his positioning.

Axel Tuanzebe 7 – Wonderfully composed on a night when his team looked anything but. Uses the ball so calmly and anticipates very well.

Phil Jones 6 – Started the game with some jitters, letting one ball bounce right over him, but had a decent second-half.

Marcos Rojo 5 – The guy is an absolute madman – a player whose next move is absolutely anybody’s guess. Accidentally produced two good crosses and then tried a rabona in the centre of the pitch.

Nemanja Matic 5 – He did not really need to be on the pitch. With Astana sitting two deep, having two holding midfielders only slowed things down, especially when one of them is Matic.

Fred 6 – Delivered in slices, sometimes going off the boil and at other times jinking into smart positions. United fans are yet to see the best of him.

Angel Gomes 7 – Probably the best academy player on the pitch overall, cleverly finding pockets of space and turning at pace brilliantly. Deserves to play many more games.

Tahith Chong 4 – Really was not his day. Just seemed to rush everything, either seeing the ball bounce off him or get stuck under his feet. You can’t expect youngsters to perform immediately.

Mason Greenwood 7 – What a moment for the 17-year-old. His first senior goal was only a matter of time, and it came in wonderful Greenwood fashion: jinking into the box, turning one way, then the other, followed by a perfect clinical finish. Plenty more to come.

Marcus Rashford 6 – Worked hard to make things happen, playing a senior role, but Solskjaer would have been angry to see him squander a couple of great opportunities to score ugly goals in the first-half.
