Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Manchester United must improve set-pieces

by Leo Nieboer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that Manchester United must improve their work at set-pieces.

The side has attracted criticism for endlessly wasting corners and free kicks, with Ashley Young and Marcus Rashford the two most commonly guilty parties.

United’s last goal from a set-piece also came during their last away win in the Premier League – a 3-1 success over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, scored by Romelu Lukaku. Before that, Nemanja Matic scored against Huddersfield Town in December last year to claim the club’s first directly goal from a corner that season.

Reflecting on why United are struggling with set pieces, Solskjaer said: “There are many reasons. We haven’t been good enough. We’ve not had the best execution. Of course, Scotty should’ve scored against Arsenal with a header. That’s something we’ll work on. We’ll get there.”

I heard a statistic from somewhere that, on average, Premier League teams score from a corner every 10 games – a stat I have no way of personally verifying, nor any interest in doing so.

If it is true, though, then United are due to score at least 74 times from corners against Newcastle United on Sunday.
