After surviving five minutes of squeaky bum time that were hairier than Juan Mata’s forearms, Manchester United emerged as unexpected victors of the Manchester Derby after a 2-1 victory at the Etihad stadium.
The photos of Sir Alex Ferguson’s celebration that instantly flooded social media were particularly fitting as this was the best performance by a Manchester United side and the most apt tribute to his legacy since the great manager stood down in 2013. This was football born out of Ferguson’s philosophy, played by a team with the hunger that was his trademark.
Two first half goals – a Marcus Rashford penalty and a superb strike by Anthony Martial – gave United a deserved three points at the Etihad despite a desperate comeback by City that went down to the wire.
The result lifts the Red Devils to fifth place in the Premier League table, just five points off Chelsea and within reach of the Champions League qualification places.
