Kieran Trippier’s name on Manchester United’s shopping list is a strange one and is also going to prove more difficult than the Red Devils had hoped, according to reports from Spain.
The England international has become a key player at high-flying Atletico Madrid, who currently top La Liga with two games in hand over the chasing pack and who are six points clear of neighbours Real.
According to The Telegraph, the Red Devils want to provide competition for, and a more attacking option to Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back and are targeting a move for the 30-year-old in June.
‘Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been pleased with Aaron Wan-Bissaka‘s progress but the 23-year-old has little competition and has started all but two United games this season,’ reporter Mike McGrath says.
‘Trippier, 30, is in his second season with Atletico Madrid following his £20 million move from Tottenham, with a year left on his contract in the summer when United will be more active in the market compared to January.’
However, Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo does not think Trippier will be going anywhere any time soon.
‘The England full back is having an exceptional campaign. He has played every minute so far and in the league he is the team’s second highest assistant with four goal passes.
‘The truth is that currently, Trippier is untouchable at Atletico Madrid. After a transitional campaign, the player has adapted to El Cholo’s [Diego Simeone’s] demands.
‘He has a contract until 2022. And when he left Tottenham for the Rojiblancos, it was because he wanted to have an experience outside his country.’
That would appear to be that, then.
