Manchester United not as keen on Dayot Upamecano as before

by Marwan Harraz

Manchester United have reportedly changed their minds in regards to RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano which will likely upset fans who wanted to see him at Old Trafford.

The young Frenchman is one of Europe’s most sought-after centre-backs and so was naturally linked to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s side.

After all, United are said to have been keen on bolstering that part of the squad for many summers now and Upamecano seemed the perfect fit.

A modern centre-back who is capable on the ball but equally capable in the air and in defending, the pacy centre-back is every club’s ideal signing.

According to The Athletic, Upamecano has a release clause of £38m that will come into effect once the current campaign is over but despite that, the Red Devils have cooled interest in him.

It’s believed only Solskjaer’s side and Bayern Munich are the most realistic destinations for him but the former have made it clear they’re no longer pursuing him as he’s not the primary target anymore, leaving the latter to take charge of the situation.

It seems Manchester United are essentially saving face by avoiding going into a battle with the German giants as they simply can’t afford to lose out on another major signing, at least not publicly.

After all, Upamecano was Solskjaer’s main centre-back target for so long and he’s now suddenly no longer the priority despite the club still searching for a defender so what has changed?
