Marcos Rojo set for surprise Premier League switch in January

by Red Billy

One of Manchester United’s forgotten stars, Marcos Rojo, could be set to leave in the January transfer window.

Rojo has not featured for United’s starting XI since November 2019, having suffered a seemingly endless stream of injuries and misadventures.

And according to The Athletic, Newcastle United could be the Argentinian’s surprise destination when the window opens again in two weeks’ time.

‘Newcastle United are among the clubs interested in the 30-year-old,’ The Athletic claims.

‘Steve Bruce wants a centre-back who can cover the left side too, and Rojo’s versatility is appealing.

‘Sheffield United are also looking at the Argentina international. Two Spanish clubs have registered enquiries but it is understood Rojo, who has been at Old Trafford since August 2014, would prefer to stay in England.

‘He is now ready to play frequently, with a loan looking more likely than a permanent transfer or United coming to an agreement over the remainder of his contract, which is worth around £100,000 a week.’

The Athletic further claims that although the 30-year-old’s contract is set to expire in June, ‘there is an option to extend it for a further year’.

This differs from information on football contract databases such as transfermarkt.com and spotrac.com, which state that there is no extension option left on his deal at United.

It is an important distinction because a loan deal becomes a much more viable option for United if they still have a year to sell the player when he returns to the club in June. If there is no extension option then this window would be the club’s last opportunity to get any kind of transfer fee for the player, so a sale would clearly suit United better.

Rojo is currently struggling to return from another injury but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said in Wednesday’s press conference that he expects him to be fit by January.
