Sergio Romero has two options for January exit from Man United

by Red Billy

Manchester United outcast Sergio Romero could be on his way out of the club in the January transfer window.

The keeper has not been registered in United’s Premier League squad after Dean Henderson was allowed to become David de Gea’s understudy this season.

Romero nearly completed a deadline day move to Everton in October but the move was blocked by United because it was said they wanted a sale rather than a loan.
But now, according to The Athletic, ‘negotiations are ongoing with an unnamed Spanish club over a loan that would cover the remainder of the goalkeeper’s contract at Old Trafford. He has six months left, but United have an option to extend by a year.
‘The 33-year-old has also been the subject of interest from Major League Soccer, with Inter Miami — co-owned by United great David Beckham — exploring an agreement.
‘But salary ceilings in the United States would not work with Romero’s wages, which are in the region of £100,000 a week.’
If United still prefer a sale then they could potentially force the Inter Miami option by making it clear to Romero that his contract will not be extended, leaving just six months on that £100,000 per week salary.

However, that could backfire if a sale did not materialise as they would then be left paying his wages for six months and then losing him for nothing in June.

The Argentinian international was considered one of the best understudies in the Premier League and for many seasons kept goal for United in cup matches whilst David de Gea was rested.

He was between the sticks in United’s 2017 Europa League final victory against Ajax under the then manager, José Mourinho.

However, last season, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dropped Romero at the semi-final stage of both the FA Cup and Europa League, despite the fact that he had only conceded three goals in 14 games across the two competitions.

Edinson Cavani has made quite an impact since his deadline day arrival at Old Trafford, but how much do you know about our other South American players, past and present? Take our quiz below to find out!
