Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba the puppetmasters as Man United overcome Aston Villa

by Red Billy

Eric Bailly was the hero of the hour after his incredible last-ditch block helped Manchester United hold on to their 2-1 lead against Aston Villa this evening, but the creative force behind this Premier League victory was undoubtedly United’s two attacking midfielders.

Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes were like puppeteers throughout the match, pinging passes around the pitch, slotting inch perfect through balls and making well-timed forward runs that caused chaos among the Aston Villa defence.

Pogba’s stats reflect his influence on the game. He achieved 77% pass accuracy, made 26 final third passes, six ball recoveries, won five aerial duels, two tackles and two fouls and drew the penalty that Fernandes dispatched for the winning goal.

The Portuguese international’s stats were equally impressive. He achieved 80% pass accuracy, made 8 ball recoveries, had five shots (two on target), created five chances and had a direct hand in 10 shots.

Fernandes has now recorded 33 goal involvements in 30 Premier League games, an incredible feat.

If the pair can keep up this form, then United can start to seriously think about mounting a title challenge, because at this level they are virtually unplayable. Better finishing from the forwards could have and arguably should have rewarded them with a more impressive scoreline that truly reflected their endeavours.
