Manchester United have now changed their main transfer priority and believe they have ‘dodged a bullet’, according to The Mirror.
Only yesterday we ran a story from 90min.com in which reporter Jamie Spencer claimed that Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho remains the club’s top transfer target and that they would look to secure a cut-price deal on the winger ahead of Euro 2020 in June.
Spencer claims that Sancho’s dip in form this season has not deterred the Red Devils, who see it as an opportunity to drive the price down.
But The Mirror’s sources inside Old Trafford are telling them the exact opposite and that, in fact, United have switched their interest back to Sancho’s teammate, Erling Haaland.
‘Manchester United’s top brass reckon they dodged a bullet by refusing to break the bank to land Jadon Sancho,’ The Mirror claims.
‘And now Old Trafford’s hierarchy are debating the need to sign Borussia Dortmund star Sancho at the end of the season.
‘Old Trafford insiders says Solskjaer is much keener on his Borussia Dortmund team-mate Erling Haaland.
‘After scoring an incredible 33 goals in his last 32 games for Dortmund, the 20-year-old Norwegian hit-man is being strongly linked with Real Madrid and Barcelona.
‘United sources say Sancho is still on their radar but Haaland is the striker boss Solskjaer really wants, with reports suggesting the striker has a £70m release clause to be activated at the end of next season.’
Although the two reports seem to be completely at odds with one another, they could in a sense both be true in that Haaland may have always been Solskjaer’s top priority.
A January 2020 move for the Norwegian broke down at the last minute and his form since has made him one of the hottest properties on the international market, with Real Madrid leading the chase to sign him when that release clause kicks in in June.
United may therefore have retrained their sights on Sancho believing that Haaland would be out of reach. But their own improved position in the Premier League and other clubs’ financial woes could mean that there is renewed belief that they can get their man.
