Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has opened up on what made him bring Teden Mengi to Derby County on loan.
The young centre-back has left temporarily in a bid to develop and get competitive minutes as he aims to become a first-team star.
Mengi is highly rated at United and there’s no doubt that if he can show his potential with Derby, he could return to find himself a part of the squad next season.
Centre-back is certainly a weak position in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad so the competition shouldn’t be too difficult.
Rooney was only recently announced as Derby’s manager, hanging up his playing boots for good so it’s interesting he’s chosen to bring in Mengi.
Wayne Rooney on Teden Mengi: "He is a fantastic young player – he is quick, and strong, he can play in a two or a three at the back. He is ready to come into the squad once the paperwork is done."

Rooney certainly seems to be a huge fan of Mengi so hopefully the player is given a lot of first-team minutes to improve.
The former striker must have used his contacts at his former club to get the deal over the line but it’s a good move for all parties involved.
Mengi will have quite the job on his hands as Derby have been struggling in the lower half of the table in the Championship.
If he can help Rooney’s side keep clean-sheets more often then they should stand a chance in climbing up the table.
