News breaking from the reliable Le Parisien in France says that Raphael Varane is set to become a Manchester United player with the clubs now very close to an agreement.
The French outlet claims that negotiations have intensified over the past few hours and that a deal is close for what will be a bargain fee for United – some €45 million (£38.59m).
‘Raphaël Varane is not officially a Manchester United player yet, but that shouldn’t be long,’ the outlet reports.
‘According to someone close to the English board, “the discussions are progressing quickly” and we are rapidly approaching an agreement between the two clubs.
‘According to our information, this is likely to occur by the end of the week on the basis of a transfer of around €45m. Initially, Real Madrid claimed nearly 80 before adjusting their claims to the current state of a market severely impacted by the pandemic.’
Personal terms between United and Varane are widely reported to have been agreed, or practically agreed, for some time. Most reports suggest a 5 year deal worth around £200,000 per week.
‘Varane felt it was time to take his career in a new direction and explore another environment. The choice of Manchester thus responds to a life project and above all to a sporting challenge commensurate with this competitor,’ Le Parisien said.
The news of the breakthrough in negotiations between the two clubs has been confirmed in part by another reliable French source, RMC Sport’s Mohamed Bouhafsi.
‘Manchester United have started negotiations with Real Madrid for the transfer of Raphael Varane Flag of France,’ he tweeted.
‘The two clubs have been exchanging for several hours, Man United asked Madrid’s expectations. The week will be decisive.
‘The player himself is in agreement with United.’

Although he has not travelled with the main Real squad to compete in the pre-season warm-up match with Glasgow Rangers, Varane has resumed training in Madrid with the likes of Toni Kroos and Gareth Bale, as can be seen here in Mundo Deportivo’s video.
Fans have heard a lot of ‘Varane deal closer’ reports in recent days and weeks but given the source on this occasion, this one should be treated as significant and very promising for the Red Devils.
