Fred finds unlikely ally in Liverpool midfielder Fabinho

Brazilian says United midfielder made scapegoat for United's poor showing

by Ayantan Chowdhury

When the fixtures for the new Premier League season were announced, most Manchester United fans were of the opinion that the first real challenge for the side would be the clash against arch-rivals Liverpool.

After a decent pre-season under Erik ten Hag, United were expected to pick up six points against Brighton and Brentford heading into the Liverpool clash. Instead, the team lost both their fixtures, while conceding six times.

Ten Hag is under immense pressure and the entire squad have been lambasted for their lack of effort and application as they failed to even do the basics right.

Ten Hag knew the midfield he had inherited was not good enough and that is why he had made the acquisition of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona a prime objective.

Almost three months on, no progress has been made and the Fred and Scott McTominay duo have still started games and the Brazilian has been woeful, with the Dutch manager replacing him first in both encounters.

Casemiro’s arrival is set to finally end the midfield partnership but Fred has found an unlikely ally in Liverpool midfield general Fabinho. The Brazilian was of the opinion that Fred has been unfairly targetted by fans and pundits despite being a solid presence in the middle of the park.

Fabinho supports Fred

According to Liverpool’s Brazil international, his compatriot at United has been made a scapegoat because of United’s poor showings in the last 12 months.

“Sometimes I don’t really understand the criticisms with Fred because he is a regular player, he always plays good football. In general Manchester United have not been successful in the last seasons so you try to find a solution or you try to put the fault on some of the players and sometimes I think Fred is that player,” he was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

Both are regulars in the Brazil national team and Fabinho is aware of the qualities that Fred possesses. While he wants the best for his friend, Fabinho wants to pile on the misery for the Red Devils, especially after he had missed out on the 5-0 hammering the Reds had inflicted at Old Trafford last season.

“He is a good player, in the national team, he is always a starter, he always plays good and, yes, sometimes the player needs a little bit more confidence to play good.

“Last season he played really good football, maybe he was one of the best United players. This season United didn’t start really good but I hope Fred will play good and United will stay playing like this. I don’t care if a win pushes them a little bit more into crisis. I just want to beat them and win three points.”

This might be the last chance for the Fred and McTominay partnership to prove they still have a future at Old Trafford. With nothing to lose, Ten Hag will be hoping his side can finally get their season back on track against their eternal rivals.
