Wayne Rooney in agreement with Gary Neville over reason for Marcus Rashford’s resurgence

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney agrees with his former club and England teammate Gary Neville about the reason behind Marcus Rashford‘s resurgence.

Rashford endured a string of months in poor form for United, which saw him lose his place in the England team.

However, since Erik ten Hag’s Old Trafford arrival, Rashford appears a totally different player and looks revitalized.

The attacker has since regained his starting berth at United and even forced himself back into Gareth Southgate’s plans.

The 25-year-old currently has three goals for the Three Lions in the World Cup, amidst a clamour for him to start games.

Neville advanced his theory that Rashford’s resurgence is due to the player “simplifying” his life like David Beckham did and focusing more on matters on the pitch than off it.

Neville nevertheless praised Rashford for his charity work and for helping society.

Rooney reiterated Neville’s stance that the United forward has simplified his life. He said, “His achievements were incredible, but I think it might have been a bit too much for him.

“It looks like Marcus is in a much better place in his head and the big thing, for me, is that during Covid he did so much campaigning work and got involved with a lot of stuff off the pitch.”

United’s record goalscorer added, “Rather than being able to just focus on his football, there was a lot on his plate, whereas what we’ve seen this season is very much a focus on football first rather than anything else. From some of the goals he has scored, you can see he is in a different headspace.”

Rooney also praised Rashford’s abilities – in particular his speed and directness when running at goal.

Against tough opposition in France, it remains to be seen whether Southgate gives the United man a chance to showcase his talent from the beginning of the game. No doubt Rashford would have been disappointed by not starting against Senegal.
