Jamie Carragher suggests dip in form the reason for Cristiano Ronaldo being dropped

by Kuda Jinya

37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo has had a torrid year in football at the club level.

Hardship has followed the star to the World Cup as he found himself on the bench against Switzerland.

Portugal boss Fernando Santos opted to start 21 year old Gonçalo Ramos instead.

He was rewarded with a stellar performance by the young forward.

Ramos scored a hat-trick in the 6-1 win over the Swiss.

Ronaldo featured in the win, coming on in the 74th minute, but failed to get onto the scoresheet.

For the better part of Ronaldo’s Qatar 2022, Portugal’s No.7 has been at the centre of a dramatic saga with former club Manchester United.

However, similar to the end of his time with the Red Devils, Ronaldo has found himself watching his side perform well without him.

Carragher weighs in on Ronaldo dropping

Many suggest that Manchester United and Portugal will flourish without Ronaldo (via Sky Sports).

Often passionate and scathing concerning Ronaldo, Jamie Carragher gave a fair and logical assessment of the Ronaldo-Portugal dropping.

The Sky Sports pundit believes Santos dropped his captain because of a dip in form rather than an act of petulance after being replaced against South Korea.

Carragher took to social media to say: “Would Santos, the manager of Portugal, drop Ronaldo just because of his reaction to being subbed in the last game? A manager at club level, maybe yes.

“[But] with possibly three games to a WC final…I think he has been left out because of his performances, not his reaction.”
