Match report: Manchester United 4-0 Sheffield United

by Zoe Hodges

Manchester United have won their last game of 2022, beating Sheffield United 4-0 in an inconsequential Conti Cup tie.

United showed good attacking intent from the start; Rachel Williams had the first chance but her shot from the edge of the area was well wide.

A long range shot from Boe Risa flew over the bar.

It was Leon who made the breakthrough for the Reds just after ten minutes and it came from a corner. A powerful shot was blocked but as it came back into the box Leon managed to flick it past the keeper.

Williams was having a good game, she was getting into space and showed tenacity and passion. Whilst committing to a ball she collided with an advertising board with a clatter but she bounced right back up.

United were dominating possession and trying to find a second and they had some good ideas but the link up play just wasn’t tight enough.

A chance came for Garcia to double their lead, she headed past the keeper on the edge of the area but dinked it wide.

Moments later a brilliant team goal allowed Leon to get her second.

Leon had a chance of getting her hat trick early in the second half but her shot was tame and nestled into the keepers gloves.

But the third wasn’t far away, a lovely cross from Thomas was turned in by a Sheffield United player.

At the other end Sheffield United had their first chance of the game but Baggaley was alive to the danger and plucked the shot out of the air.

It was nice to see some of the academy players get a good few minutes in as Keira Barry had around thirty minutes to show the manager what she could do and Aherne got around ten.

Martha Thomas made it four as her shot trickled past the keeper into the far bottom corner.

Sheffield United tried to pull one back and Baggaley came out to the ball but couldn’t quite get there. Luckily Thorisdottir had gone back to clear up.

Williams almost made it five but she dragged her shot wide.

Garcia had a shot in the final five minutes but her powerful strike went wide.

Team: Baggaley, Batlle (Blundell), Thorisdottir, Turner (Le Tissier),Tounkara, Boe Risa, Staniforth, Garcia, Leon (Barry), Williams (Aherne), Thomas (Zelem)
