Erik ten Hag says striking reinforcement required while admitting that Anthony Martial still not fit enough to handle workload

Manchester United’s need to address issues in attack have been exacerbated following the departure of last season’s top-scorer Cristiano Ronaldo.

Manager Erik ten Hag has made it clear to the club’s owners that the club should try and bring in reinforcements in attack during the January transfer window.

Marcus Rashford‘s form has offset those problems somewhat, with the Mancunian scoring in each of the five games since the World Cup.

But it seems like there is a lot of dependence on the England international while the other players have struggled to get on the scoring sheet.

Martial still not fully-fit

Rashford has cored 13 times across all competitions, while fellow striker Anthony Martial has netted five times.

The Frenchman has not been helped by injury woes but recently, he has started in all games post the World Cup but seems to be ineffectual as he has been substituted in all of those games.

But the Dutch manager has refused to blame the France international and admitted that it is important to manage his minutes due to persistent injury problems.

And that is why, the former Ajax manager feels, recruiting a striker is of paramount importance in January.

“There is a reason. Because he cannot match in this moment the load of many games. That’s why we are looking for another striker,” the United manager was quoted as saying by the club’s media department.

” It is not about if we don’t rely on him, but the physical load is not in this moment so high that he can play every third game of every third day, a game of 90 minutes. So, I have to managed that together with him.

“So, we are really on the thin line at this moment because his profile. But the quality of Anthony Martial is so important for our match, for our game.

He has the right movements, his ball security. So, he brings a lot for the team. Pressing, let’s not forget that.”

And despite admitting that his side are not scoring as much as he would have liked, he feels the squad can deal with these issues.

Midfielders, wingers need to chip in

He also admitted that he has high hopes from stand-in skipper Bruno Fernandes, right-winger Antony and midfielder Christian Eriksen and feel they can is chip in with crucial goals to help the team’s cause when needed.

The Brazilian trickster has netted four times in his debut season despite not setting the stage on fire while Fernandes has scored three times while generally impressing with his link-up play.

Even the Dane has netted twice while his set-pieces have resulted in a couple more goals.

“I am not concerned about that only Marcus Rashford has so many goals because I am convinced that other players as Martial play today. Antony Dos Santos can score his own goal.

“We also know Bruno Fernandes is very capable to score a goal and Christian Eriksen will create and also is capable to score a goal. So, we have more players who can score goals.”
