Lucy Staniforth leaves Manchester United

by Zoe Hodges

Today Manchester United have confirmed the departure of Lucy Staniforth who has completed a permanent transfer to Aston Villa.

The 30 year-old midfielder joined the Reds in 2020, making her professional debut in United’s 3-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion in the league.

Her first goal came in the team’s 6-0 away victory over Burnley in the FA Cup in April 2021.

She went on to make 41 appearances for United and scored three goals during that time.

She has also had a successful career with England having made 17 senior appearances for her country.

She has signed an 18 month contract with Villa following the early termination of her contract with United.

Villa manager Carla Ward said: “Lucy is someone who will bring a huge amount of experience to this squad.

“She’s a winner and is someone who can play off both sides as well as centrally. We’re delighted to have her at Aston Villa.”

Meanwhile, United are looking to sign Lisa Naalsund from Norwegian side Brann.

The 27-year old midfielder has been linked with the Reds for some time now but rumour has it that a deal is edging closer.

United recently clarified in a recent fans forum that although there may be some movement for both the men’s and women’s team in January, the main focus will be on the Summer window.
