Harry Maguire finally breaks his silence on lack of first-team minutes under Erik ten Hag

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire believes that it is a team game at the club and everyone has a part to play for the Red Devils.

Maguire spoke to club media via Independent and stated that with fixture congestion and United being in many competitions, players including himself will get opportunities to make their mark.

Since Erik ten Hag’s arrival, Maguire has found it hard to nail down a permanent starting berth in the team.

Ten Hag has shown a clear preference for a centre-back partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

Maguire’s situation was made worse recently after Ten Hag’s repeated selection of Luke Shaw in the left-centre-back role ahead of the former Leicester man.

Maguire told United Daily ahead of the Arsenal game on Sunday, “I think subs throughout our season have been really important, they’ve scored some crucial goals, players have come on and had a big impact in the game. So we know it’s a squad game.

“Obviously everyone wants to start and everyone’s disappointed when they don’t start the games, but that’s the way it should be because we’re all footballers, we’re all competitive, we want to play football.

“But we’ve also got to be ready when we’re called upon.”

Maguire added that the secret to a successful squad is competition for places.

The 29-year-old said that at the moment there is plenty of competition for positions at Old Trafford, which can only be a good thing for the team.

Maguire’s comments come as doubts over his long-term future at United mount. West Ham are said to hold an interest in the defender.

Aston Villa were also said to be keen on Maguire. United however want to keep their captain at least until the end of the season.
