Manchester United official spotted at Liga Portugal clash in possible Diogo Costa scouting mission

by Derick Kinoti

An official from Manchester United was spotted on Saturday during Porto’s game against Vitória de Guimarães.

Portuguese news outlet O Jogo via SportWitness relays that a representative from United attending Porto games is not a rare occasion.

The Red Devils have been known to have scouts present for games in Portugal’s top flight.

What stuck out in this instance is that the United official attended Porto’s away game. Usually, they limit themselves to home games at the Estádio do Dragão.

SportWitness relays that it’s not only United that had personnel represented their interests.

Borussia Dortmund, Real Sociedad, Rennes and Bologna also sent emissaries.

A player that United could have been looking at is Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa. The shot-stopper has been widely linked to an Old Trafford switch on a number of occasions.

There are major doubts about David de Gea‘s suitability for an Erik ten Hag system.

De Gea’s flaws were made more profound and visible during United’s 3-2 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates.

The Spaniard’s awful distribution, inability to play with his feet and lack of sweeping action were weaknesses Arsenal players exploited over and over again on their way to clinching all three points.

De Gea’s dominance in his box and willingness to claim crosses also came into question. There was an instance during the game in which he had the chance to catch the ball under no pressure, but he instead elected to punch it right to an Arsenal player’s feet.

It’s for such reasons that a swoop for Costa has been mooted. Granted the Portuguese had a poor World Cup, but he’s been excellent for Porto, especially in the Champions League.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Jorge Mendes was working on a deal to bring the 23-year-old to England over the summer.
