Cristiano Ronaldo’s command to Jorge Mendes initiated bitter end to relationship

by Derick Kinoti

Former Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo commanded super agent Jorge Mendes to get him a move to Chelsea or Bayern Munich or face losing him as a client.

It’s no secret that Ronaldo made conscious attempts to leave United last summer.

Several clubs however moved to publicly declare that they don’t want him and are not interested in his services.

Bayern Munich CEO, Oliver Kahn admitted in public that they flirted with the likelihood of bringing Ronaldo to the Allianz Arena but they quickly ruled against making a move for him.

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly was also interested in bringing the 37-year-old to Stamford Bridge.

Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel however strongly opposed the addition of Ronaldo to his ranks. His reluctance to accept Ronaldo was a factor in his eventual sacking.

However, soon after, even Boehly, a transfer-hungry megalomaniac, moved on.

El Mundo via The Mirror reports, “Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly demanded super agent Jorge Mendes secure him a move to either Bayern Munich or Chelsea last summer – before the potential deals collapsed after both clubs were alarmed the star had missed the start of pre-season training.”

“‘Bayern, Chelsea or we break up, Ronaldo reportedly demanded, with the command coming ‘after Jorge Mendes expressed to Cristiano his disagreement with many of his decisions in recent years, the first being to leave Real Madrid.”

“Mendes had touted Ronaldo to several clubs during the transfer window, with Bayern and Chelsea the clubs most prominently linked with a move for the star, in part due to his commercial appeal.”

The final straw in Ronaldo and Mendes’ relationship was the striker’s controversial interview with Piers Morgan.

Against Mendes’ advice, Ronaldo went ahead to grant Morgan the interview – an ill-informed course of action that rapidly backfired.

Lack of interest forced the former United forward to move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr. This move was facilitated by Ricky Regufe, a close ally of the player.
