Sevilla sack Jorge Sampaoli ahead of Europa quarter-final against Manchester United

by Derick Kinoti

Spanish club Sevilla are set to sack manager Jorge Sampaoli, which means that a new boss will be in the dugout when they meet Manchester United in the quarter-final of the Europa League.

After successfully dispatching Real Betis in the Round of 16, the Red Devils were drawn against Sevilla.

So far in the Europa League, United have faced three La Liga sides — Real Sociedad, Barcelona and Betis.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reported, “Sevilla are set to sack Jorge Sampaoli in the next hours.”

“Confirmed — board now already working on new coach to be appointed.”

Romano added, “Sampaoli joined Sevilla in October but he’s now set to leave the club with José Mendilibar the favourite, as Spanish media reported.”

Sport have detailed that alongside José Luis Mendilibar, José Bordalás is also in the running to take over from the sacked Sampaoli.

AS have relayed that at the moment, Sevilla are crunching the numbers to work out Sampaoli’s payoff package.

The Argentine is set to receive a sum in excess of €10 million (£8.7m). Sampaoli’s dismissal comes after Los Nervionenses suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Getafe on Sunday.

The result left Sevilla just two points above the relegation zone.

When club football resumes after the international break, Sevilla will face Cadiz and Celta Vigo in La Liga before clashing against the Red Devils on April 13 for the first leg.

Erik ten Hag recently spoke about the prospect of facing Sevilla and warned that their woeful La Liga form means nothing in Europe.

Ten Hag remarked that they are there for a reason and his players must be wary of the threat they possess.

“If you are in this stage of the competition, you are still in, you have a good team, so this is the opportunity for them to make a success of the season.”

“So we have to play our best football.”
