Video of Wout Weghorst and Lionel Messi’s disagreement during World Cup goes viral

by Conner Botterill

The full video of Manchester United star Wout Weghorst’s spat with Lionel Messi at the World Cup has come to light.

The dispute came after a fiery quarter-final encounter in which Weghorst pulled The Netherlands back from the brink of defeat with two late goals to take the game into extra-time.

Messi and Argentina eventually prevailed thanks to Emiliano Martinez’s heroics in the penalty shootout, setting up a semi-final clash with Croatia.

The ill-tempered affair spilled over after the game, with both sets of players clashing after the shootout.

Messi took issue with Weghorst watching and waiting for him to complete his post-match interview.

The video shows Weghorst staring at Messi whilst he speaks to the media, with Messi then shouting, “What are you looking at, what are you looking at?” toward the Dutchman.

Messi then continues to call Weghorst a “fool” whilst telling him to “get out of here”.

The Argentine then appeared to blank Weghorst when he attempts to approach him when making his way back to the dressing room.

Weghorst then proceeded to exchange words with Sergio Aguero, claiming that Messi refused to shake his hand before calling the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner disrespectful.

“I was waiting for him and wanted to give him a hand. And he’s doing (acting) like that? That’s disrespectful,” said Weghorst.

The video certainly appears to back up Weghorst’s claims, with Messi clearly blanking the United forward as he offers his hand.

Since the World Cup, Weghorst secured a dream loan move to Old Trafford where he has already picked up the first trophy of his career and has his eyes set on more silverware come the end of the season.

United have advanced to the later stages of the FA Cup and Europa League and Weghorst will be hoping to play a key role between now and the end of the campaign in a bid to earn a permanent move to Manchester.
