Tottenham Hotspur keen on Manchester United target Diogo Costa

by David O'Neill

Tottenham Hotspur are moving quickly to put forward a proposal for Manchester United target Diogo Costa.

That is according to Portuguese outlet CM Journal, which claims that the London side see him as the ideal goalkeeper to replace Hugo Lloris.

Their current number one is contracted until 2024 but is rumoured to be looking for a return to France in the summer.

Given his declining performances at 36 years of age, Tottenham would certainly be looking to a long term replacement and Costa would fit the bill.

As for Man United, David de Gea is out of contract in the summer and while negotiations over an extension are underway, no agreement has been reached.

There are also concerns over his suitability to Erik ten Hag’s preferred style of play, owing to his poor distribution, inability to sweep, and non-existent ability to deal with crosses.

Costa would be an immediate fix to all of those issues and, at 23 years of age, would be a long term solution to the goalkeeper position at Old Trafford.

The stumbling block for both clubs would almost certainly be the asking price that FC Porto will set for their star player.

Back in December, Costa signed a contract extension which brought his release clause up to a whopping €75m.

For United, that would be quite the stumbling block, given the other positions in need of major investment.

Erik ten Hag wants to recruit a top class striker and add more quality to his midfield options. There is also interest in adding more suitable players to the defence, most notably at right back.

That could allow Spurs to steal a march on the Red Devils for the Portugal star, although they themselves will needs to get funds from somewhere.
