Manchester United linked with sensational summer swoop for free agent Houssem Aouar

by Ayantan Chowdhury

The loss against Newcastle on Sunday exposed a lot of chinks in Manchester United’s armour with the lack of quality midfielders a key talking point.

Both Scott McTominay and loan singing Marcel Sabitzer failed to drop deep and offer a passing route when United tried to build from the back.

The duo also did not manage to compete for duels nor did they pass forward with any real effect and this will no doubt have raised doubts in manager Erik ten Hag’s mind regarding squad depth.

United’s midfield in shambles

It is safe to say that with Casemiro suspended and Christian Eriksen out injured, United have suffered greatly. They do not have an elite passer and ball progresser currently in their midst.

The club have been linked with a plethora of midfielders including the likes of Frenkie de Jong of Barcelona, West Ham’s Declan Rice, English sensation Jude Bellingham and Southampton rising star Romeo Lavia.

The latest name to be linked with a move to the Red Devils is Houssem Aouar of Olympique Lyon. His contract with the French side is expiring at the end of the season.

According to El ChiringuitoTv, “United have started negotiations with Lyon for Aouar. The Champions League, key in his decision.”

The France international’s agents had offered the player to United in the January transfer window but the club decided against paying a transfer fee for a player who would become a free agent in six months time.

And now it seems United have decided to act and the Frenchman could potentially solve a lot of issues plaguing the team currently.

Bosman move for Houssem Aouar

The 24-year-old can play as a No 8 and as a No 10 and has a great goalscoring record while also chipping in with important assists.

Aouar was frequently linked with a big-money move to Arsenal but Lyon’s asking price proved too much for the Gunner and now it could be United who can profit.

The versatile star has also been linked with a move to Spanish side Real Betis who are waiting but a move to the Premier League could be too tempting to turn down.

Aouar has not managed to hit the heights expected from him this season due to a mixture of injury and loss of form but he could rekindle them when he moves to the Theatre of Dreams.
