Why Anthony Martial is vital to Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United

by Raj Dholakia

Anthony Martial has had a torrid time with injuries this season.

The Manchester United striker has been sidelined for over 20 games this campaign.

Despite his woeful injury record, Erik ten Hag has publicly highlighted the player’s importance to his team.

While Martial might not be the most prolific goalscorer, what he offers Ten Hag is balance in attack.

United are currently struggling to score goals, and have been solely dependent on Marcus Rashford’s individual brilliance since December.

While Wout Weghorst has done a decent job up front, he lacks the technical quality needed to excel as Ten Hag’s centre forward.

Martial’s ability to link with his fellow teammates in and around the opposition box makes him indispensable to Ten Hag.

The Frenchman has averaged a goal or assist in every game this season(G/A every 88.9 minutes).

What he brings to this United team is more than just goals.

In his latest press conference, Ten Hag spoke about Martial’s qualities:

“When he’s in the team, we play our best football and we have our best results as a team. I defend him because I point to the stats and see how he contributes.”

“The time he [Martial] needs for a goal is less. When he’s in the team, we play our best football and we have our best results as a team. I defend him because I point to the stats and see how he contributes.”
