Predicted Man United XI vs Tottenham Hotspur: Harry Maguire to be frozen out

by Red Billy

Bruno Fernandes is a major doubt for Manchester United’s trip to White Hart Lane to face Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.

Fernandes sustained a foot injury in the first half of United’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Brighton and played through the pain until part-way through extra time.

Although the player walked away from Wembley without support, his wife raised the alarm on social media yesterday when she posted a picture of him with his foot propped up by cushions, with crutches and a protective boot on the floor beside him.

It therefore seems unlikely that the Portuguese will recover in time for Thursday’s game and we expect Marcel Sabitzer to take the number 10 role in his absence.

With Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane injured, manager Erik ten Hag has a decision to make about who should play centre back.

Harry Maguire is normally the first choice replacement for Varane but he was suspended for the Brighton match, where Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw were superb.

It would be very surprising if Ten Hag were to reinstate Maguire after that performance, especially since his own outings recently have been littered with mistakes and an own goal.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot also both played really well against the Seagulls and should retain the right back and left back positions, respectively.

David de Gea, as always, will be in goal.

Casemiro and Christian Eriksen should play in the twin pivot regardless of whether Scott McTominay has recovered from injury in time. Fred is another option.

Up front, Anthony Martial is expected to lead the line again with Marcus Rashford on the left wing and Antony on the right. However, Martial was disappointing on Sunday and there is a case for putting Rashford up front and bringing in Jadon Sancho on the left wing. There is an outside chance that Alejandro Garnacho could make the bench as he recovers from a knee injury.

With all that in mind, this is our predicted line-up for Thursday’s 8.15pm kick off:
