Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has expressed his relief after the team brought an end to their run of consecutive defeats by beating Burnley at Turf Moor.
Fernandes’ only goal was enough to secure victory for United.
He latched onto a superb ball over the top from Jonny Evans to volley it into the back of the Burnley net.
Fernandes spoke to TNT and indicated that United simply had to win against Burnley after a number of poor results.
The Portugal international said, “We knew the momentum was tough but that we could come back from this. The team has great players and a great spirit. We’ve been a little bit unlucky but the performances haven’t been the best. Today we showed great spirit.”
He conceded that the Red Devils had to dig deep at times to withstand the threats posed by Vincent Kompany’s men.
“With the performance we sacrificed a lot because Burnley played great football and have great qualities. I think the points they have don’t show the quality they have because it’s really tough to play against them.”
“So it’s not just an easy win here – we’re really happy for the points and hopefully it will give us strength for the rest.”
Fernandes picked out Jonny Evans for praise after the defender’s heroics at the back.
He explained that he knew Evans was a quality passer and would have no problems whatsoever delivering such an exquisite diagonal.
“It was a great pass, obviously. I know he has great qualities for playing the ball in behind, with both feet, so I knew he could give this pass and I was waiting for him.”
The playmaker divulged that Burnley’s tight defensive unit made it necessary to come up with a moment of brilliance.
Evans provided this with the assist, and so did Bruno with the subsequent finish.
