Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has indicated that the club have a “massive problem” on their hands following Bruno Fernandes’ injury in the 2-1 loss to Aston Villa.
Fernandes sustains injury
A double from Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers not only denied United a move up to fifth place in the Premier League standings but also consigned Matheus Cunha’s equaliser at the stroke of half-time to a footnote.
United put up a gallant performance at Villa Park but it was unfortunately not enough to get anything from the game.
Beyond the result, the other major disappointing development was Fernandes’ injury. The United skipper pulled up with an issue during the latter stages of the opening 45 minutes.
He attempted to carry on but it was clear he could not continue playing. Fernandes was taken off during the interval and replaced by Lisandro Martinez, who saw out the rest of the game in a midfield position, right next to Manuel Ugarte.
After the final whistle, Ruben Amorim disclosed that Fernandes faces a spell on the sidelines with a soft tissue problem.
Speaking on Viaplay, Schmeichel warned that Fernandes will be a big miss for the Red Devils.
Schmeichel speaks on Fernandes’ issue
The ex-United goalkeeper said [as quoted by Metro], “That’s a problem for Manchester United. It is a problem, it’s a massive problem because he is the leader of the team, he’s the captain of the team.”
“We don’t see the best of him because he plays in a position that is not his prime position, if you like. He’s a better No.10 but the system doesn’t really have that position for him.”
Schmeichel added, “They need him back there, he’s one of them that can help all the players around him.”
“Without a shadow of a doubt, he’s been the best performer for Manchester United in the last many years.”
Amorim’s Fernandes problem has been exacerbated by the absence of Kobbie Mainoo, who is sidelined with a calf injury and expected to miss Saturday’s clash with Newcastle at Old Trafford.
