Christian Pulisic: Tim Howard advises United target over his future

Manchester United have been heavily linked with former Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic in recent days. The US international earned a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2019 after some impressive performances with Borussia Dortmund.

Unfortunately, Pulisic could not live up to expectations with the Blues, although he did win the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup. Captain America left the London giants in the summer of 2023 to move to AC Milan and has been a revelation this season.

Pulisic has registered 10 goals and two assists in 21 appearances for the Rossoneri, turning heads at several clubs across Europe. A recent report relayed by The Peoples Person states that United are eager to secure his signature, while Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring him.

Former Red Devils and United States goalkeeper Tim Howard has offered his views on the situation.

A Premier League resurgence on the cards?

Speaking on the Unfiltered Soccer podcast, Howard compared Pulisic’s situation to that of Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah. He said: “I backed him to the hilt at Chelsea and unfortunately he didn’t get the rub of the green, went through some different coaches and then he went off.”

“But he sort of reminds me of Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne in that he went off, he’s matured and he’s older, and he’s gone to one of the best teams in the league.”

“He’s put AC Milan on his back and he’s been the best player in that league so now I think, from the physical, football maturity-side, he now comes back to the Premier League, and he gets slotted into a Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, I think there’s actually another level for him. I personally like it.”

The 27 year old will enter the final year of his contract this summer and a recent report relayed by The Peoples Person states that the Rossoneri want €70-80 million to let him go. The report adds that the player is open to a move back to the Premier League.

The pull of Manchester United will be hard to turn down

Howard went on to state that Pulisic should join a top club to prove himself, adding: “If he’s saying, ‘I kind of want to play every week, be the guy’, then he can go to a number six through to eight team in the Premier League.”

“But if he’s really saying, ‘I’ve been to the Premier League, I’ve tasted what it’s like at the top at a big club like Chelsea, I want more of that, I’ve got something to prove here’… I don’t know his mentality but I think he does [think like that] and I’d like to see him on these teams.”

“If I look at Liverpool and I look at Arsenal, the jury is out on Manchester United… these are well-grooved teams, they really are. They’re well run, they’re well-grooved, they’re playing well.”

“So if they’re buying him and paying a decent fee for him then they have a plan for him. It’s not part of an experiment… maybe it would be with Manchester United a little bit but it’s still Manchester United. I don’t think you can turn that down personally.”

Final Thoughts

Pulisic’s ability to operate across the frontline as well as in the attacking midfield position does make him an enticing proposition for United, who have to lay down succession plans for Bruno Fernandes soon. The Portuguese maestro will turn 32 later this year and is out of contract at the end of next season.

The US international could be an option to fill Fernandes’ shoes at Old Trafford. However, AC Milan’s steep asking price for a player who is out of contract in less than 18 months raises doubts about the feasibility of the deal.
