Casemiro may be set to leave Manchester United this summer, but he has already given fans plenty of reasons to remember him by. The Brazilian has rolled back the years at Old Trafford this season and is now indispensable under caretaker manager Michael Carrick.

Brought in to add more solidity to the Red Devils’ midfield, the 34 year old has also contributed in the final third, where his intelligence and experience have been key in breaking down resolute defences. The five-time Champions League winner has registered 22 goals and 14 assists from 152 appearances for the club to date.

Casemiro hit the ground running after arriving from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022. The Brazilian won the EFL Cup in his debut campaign, even scoring in the 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the final, where he was adjudged Man of the Match.

Unfortunately, the veteran midfielder lost prominence in his second campaign, and he also struggled last campaign, first under Erik ten Hag and then under Ruben Amorim. However, Casemiro has regained his mojo this season and is playing some of his best football since arriving at the Theatre of Dreams.

Casemiro’s 2025/26 campaign

Casemiro started the campaign with a new pivot partner in Bruno Fernandes, in former head coach Amorim’s 3-4-3 system. While the team struggled for consistency, the Brazilian put in one strong performance after another.

Following the Portuguese’s departure and Carrick’s arrival, United shifted to a 4-2-3-1 formation, with the Englishman stationing Kobbie Mainoo alongside the Brazilian in midfield. In response, Casemiro took his game to another level and even won the Player of the Matchweek in February, following his exploits in the 3-2 win over Fulham.

The Brazilian has registered five goals and two assists from 27 games in all competitions for the English giants this season, all but two of which have been starts.

However, the player’s contract expires this summer, and he has announced that he will leave for a new adventure at the end of this season. The Red Devils are already laying down succession plans for the future, with several candidates shortlisted as Casemiro’s potential successor.

The Brazilian has now opened up on his admiration for a former legendary United midfielder.

Studied Scholes

Speaking to DAZN, as cited by Sport Witness, Casemiro revealed that he studied Paul Scholes when United were winning everything under Sir Alex Ferguson. He said: “In particular, especially Zidane. Of course Zidane is number one, for me he is the one I always looked at closely.”

“But I also watched a lot of football in the period when United were winning it all, with [Alex] Ferguson. So a player I liked a lot was Paul Scholes, who played a bit in my position. When he played, I watched him very closely.”

“When you are a kid, everyone on TV becomes someone you pay attention to. You are always watching a lot of football. I really enjoyed those players.”

Final Thoughts

United’s decision to let Casemiro leave is understandable given the player’s age and his exorbitant wages. While fans will be sad to see the Brazilian leave, there is no doubt that he will be fondly remembered at the Theatre of Dreams for years to come.
