Manchester United’s interest has given Borussia Dortmund a new headache heading into the summer transfer window.
Earlier this year, it was widely reported in Germany that Nico Schlotterbeck’s contract renewal at Dortmund was “nearly finalized”.
However, Schlotterbeck has clarified that the negotiations with the Bundesliga outfit are far from advanced following the departure of sporting director Sebastian Kehl.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Dortmund think that this is just a pretext. The real reason behind the German defender’s recent comments could be “a new interest” from United and Liverpool.
Borussia Dortmund set Nico Schlotterbeck price tag
Sky Sports Germany‘s Florian Plettenberg has now provided more insight into how Dortmund plan to tackle the major U-turn from their defensive leader, Nico Schlotterbeck.
It is claimed that further meetings are planned between the central defender’s camp and the new Dortmund sporting director, Oli Book, during which, among other things, Schlotterbeck’s release clause will be discussed.
The 26-year-old is set to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Westfalenstadion in the summer, leaving the club sweating over his future.
It is understood that a new top club has entered the race for the Germany international, who would be available for €30-35 million (£26.1-30.5m) this summer if he continues to stall contract talks.
Manchester United need Nico Schlotterbeck
United should be in the queue to take advantage of the precarious situation at Dortmund, as the Red Devils’ backline is paper thin, to say the least.
The ageing Harry Maguire is yet to renew his contract at Old Trafford and Lisandro Martinez is entering liability territory due to his persistent injury problems. Meanwhile, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are still too raw to be relied upon to start regularly for the Premier League giants.
Schlotterbeck has established himself as a leader figure in the Bundesliga, impressing with his positional awareness and dominance in duels.
In possession, he is arguably one of Europe’s best ball progressors, owing to his exceptional carrying and passing.
