Alexander Buttner’s agent confirms transfer talks with Besiktas

by Sam Peoples

Alexander Buttner’s agent has confirmed that he is currently negotiating a move to Turkish side Besiktas for the Dutch defender.

The 24-year-old has only spent one year at Manchester United but he hardly featured for David Moyes’ sides on the pre-season tour with the Scot preferring to use Fabio as an alternative to Patrice Evra.

With his game time limited and opportunities likely to be lessened this year at Old Trafford, Buttner could move away in search of first team football his agent said.

“During the match against Sevilla in the past weekend, interest was expressed,” he told Renascenca Radio.

“He put in a good performance. There was interest from Benfica to sign a defender, but that news is already history.

“Two days later, Benfica confirmed to me that they would keep the two left-backs [Lorenzo Melgarejo and Bruno Cortez] that they have left in the squad.

“I am currently negotiating with Besiktas, but with Benfica? No. Benfica showed interest and then gave up.”

Last season, Buttner played a key role in the revival of Evra but now that Fabio has returned from loan, United fans would no doubt rather see the Brazilian given game time ahead of Buttner because of how poor he is defensively. His natural attacking game is pleasing on the eye but he even struggled to defend against teams on our pre-season tour.

He hasn’t got the calibre to be Evra’s long term replacement whereas Fabio might if he is given the game time to improve, so a move away for Buttner may be the best thing for his career if he wants to try and force his way into Holland’s side.
