Everton’s statement suggests they want to sell duo to David Moyes

by Sam Peoples

David Moyes’ £28 million double bid for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines was not a surprise to most United fans. There had been an air of expectancy over a move for both players that had been brewing since his £12 million offer for Baines was rebuffed earlier this summer.

Everton’s refusal of the dual bid from Manchester United was expected but what was a surprise was their public reaction to the offer with an official statement released by the club which read:

“Everton can confirm that it has received bids from Manchester United for two players. Those bids were immediately rejected out of hand as derisory and insulting.

“The Club did not make public these details as it was vital Roberto Martinez’s preparations for the opening game of the Premier League season were not disrupted in anyway.”

If the Merseyside club had no intention of selling Fellaini and Baines, why would they have gone public with their statement labelling the bids as ‘derisory and insulting’ rather than simply stating that neither player was for sale at any price? It sounds more like a ‘come-back-with-an-improved-offer’ plea rather than a firm hands off approach.

Everton could simply have rejected the bid in a similar fashion to that which United adopted in reaction to Chelsea’s approaches for Wayne Rooney which would have indicated that they have no desire to sell either player at any price. Instead, they have drawn attention to their valuation of Fellaini and Baines, indicating that they are free to leave for the right money.
