Garay joins up with super agent Mendes ahead of potential United move

by Tom Parker

Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay has been a man interesting a whole host of clubs for a while now and if his switch to super agent Jorge Mendes is anything to go by, a move to one of Europe’s elite appears to be something of a formality.

Mendes and his agency Gestifute represent some of the game’s biggest and most recognisable figures with Jose Mourinho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao all clients.

Mendes himself was the key in concluding the transfers of Portugal based players Cristiano Ronaldo, Anderson, Nani and of course Bebe, and now it appears Garay could be the next in line to join United.

Garay has been excellent for Benfica since joining them in 2011, making 54 appearances for the Portugeuse outfit, and has been watched by United scouts on more than one occasion, most recently two months ago against tile rivals Porto.

The 26-year-old is a great reader of the game and has formed a fantastic partnership with Luisao for his current club with Garay playing a Rio Ferdinand type role, sweeping up and intercepting any danger. He is also more than comfortable on the ball.

Despite reports that the club and Ferdinand are keen to reach an agreement, securing a replacement for the 34-year-old this summer could be a priority for Sir Alex Ferguson, especially considering the injury and fitness concerns over the ageing Nemanja Vidic and his defensive partner.

More so, the move to get Mendes on board is the biggest indication yet that former Real Madrid man Garay will part company with Benfica this summer. United have been linked with Mats Hummels, but the Argentine would represent a cheaper option, freeing up funds for an elusive central midfield signing.

It may just be Rio Ferdinand that the centre-half is earmarked to eventually succeed for United, as the two compare favourably, and at 26, he is at the perfect age, experienced enough to fit in seamlessly but still some years off his peak.
