Javier Hernandez hints at leaving United in contradictory message

by Sam Peoples

Yesterday, Hernandez indicated that he was still willing to fight for his placeĀ and wouldn’t tire of trying to force his way into Manchester United’s first team but this morning, a simple retweet on Twitter has placed seeds of doubt around that message.

He retweeted Sky Sports’ interview with Carlos VelaĀ where his Mexican compatriot indicated that he may have to leave Old Trafford if his game time doesn’t increase.

“Javier is my good friend – and I hope he gets lots of chances this season at Manchester United,” Vela said.

“He is one of the best finishers in England and deserves chances under the new coach.

“If he plays regularly he will score, so I don’t totally understand why a player of his quality has not played more games.

“If he doesn’t play regularly he will need to think about leaving.

“You always want to succeed at the biggest clubs – but if he is not given the chance there will be big teams in England and Europe wanting him.”

Moyes piled praise on Van Persie and Rooney after their performances against Fulham and that is the only reason Hernandez isn’t getting game time. There is no doubt that Hernandez deserves more minutes on the pitch but if we are on a seven game unbeaten streak, why would Moyes change anything?

Hernandez’s current situation with Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney mirrors that of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back when Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke made him third choice but Hernandez has greater responsibilities for Mexico and there is increasing external pressures on him to play more football.

The only surprise about Hernandez’s frustration is that it hasn’t come sooner. He had the best goals-to-minutes ratio in the Premier League last year but when you have two strikers in front of you who have nearly 400 league goals between them, you know the competition for a place in the squad will always be tough.

You can’t begrudge Hernandez’s frustration given how immaculate his attitude has been thus far but if Moyes doesn’t want the Mexican to leave in the summer, he has to make sure he balances the squad rotation to keep everybody happy. It would be a massive blow if we were to lose Hernandez given his prowess in front of goal because the squad is so much stronger with him in it.
