Lindegaard: I want David’s place

by jonnyescott

Manchester United’s very own big Dane Anders Lindegaard has spoken out about the teams controversial defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday and how he intends to challenge David De Gea for the starting XI spot between the posts.

Up until De Gea’s recent run in the team, the two goalkeepers had been trading appearances in the #1 jersey with neither having a firm grip on the spot. But, since De Gea has settled in the team, Lindegaard has had to warm the bench or play with the reserves.

In an exclusive interview with MUTV, Lindegaard talks about the how the disappointment of Tuesday will only motivate United to get a good result against Chelsea in the FA Cup on Sunday.

He said: “I sense a certain determination in the team as well that Sunday there are going to be no questions asked about who is going to win that game. We have to bounce back quickly and strongly.”

Lindegaard has made just 16 appearances for United’s first team since joining from Aalesund in January 2010 but he has been used as an over aged player in the U21 squad recently.

“It’s been way too long since I played.” Lindegaard continued. “I miss it a lot so it’s nice to be able to play some competitive football again.”

Despite De Gea all but cementing his place as United’s number one keeper, Lindegaard still has hope of getting another chance to be Fergie’s first choice pick.

“Of course [I will fight for my place]. Otherwise, I could just pack my bags and leave.

“It’s all about pushing each other in all positions in the first team. I want David’s place. At the moment is how it’s always been when he’s been playing. It’s no different now to what it was a year ago.”

It has been a long time since Manchester United have had two goalkeepers in the squad both capable of being our first choice goalkeeper – a far cry from the days of Taibi. With competition for places at United spanning all over the field, it’s safe to say that the future is bright at Old Trafford.
