Manchester United have bid for Uruguayan rejected

by Sam Peoples

I have trained with the first-team. I am very happy and I was received very well. It was a surprise to get the chance to test with Manchester United. I’m glad and happy, and grateful to Penarol who allowed me to travel. I was treated so well and Chicharito [Javier Hernandez] helped me a lot. The work outs were short but very demanding.” Guillermo Varela

Manchester United have had a €1.5 million bid for Guillermo Varela rejected according to reports emerging from Uruguay.

The bid was believed to include a future payment of €800,000 to be paid in €200,000 instalments every time Varela plays ten games or more per season as a starter.

And El Diario suggest that Varela’s club Penarol will hold out until after the U20 World Cup in the hope that his price will rise due to his performances but the fact that 30% of Varela is owned individually by Paul Bentancur, the agent who brought Gaston Ramirez to Southampton in the summer, may complicate procedures.

Speaking on the transfer of Varela, Penarol’s vice-president Edward Welker said: “The U20 World Cup can exploit a higher price and that may improve but not simply to a side in the European market.

“It can also happen, hopefully that does not happen, what happened to us with Elbio Alvarez, an injury or a bad season. It’s complicated, it is not simple.”

The 20-year-old spent a week on trial at Carrington recently and admitted that he enjoyed spending time training with the first team, pointing to a friendly reception from Javier Hernandez as one of his trip highlights.

United’s scouting system in South America unearthed the Da Silva twins and with the likes of Bruno Gomes strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in the future, it is finding some real gems.

Varela will take part in the FIFA U20 World Cup in Turkey this June/July and it will be the first time that United fans will get to have a good look at the player.
